Una de las cosas buenas que han derivado de esta crisis que cada día nos vacía un poco más el bolsillo, es el renacer de la artesanía y de las cosas hechas a mano. Para salir adelante y para buscar nuevas alternativas de futuro, son muchos los que, como yo, han desempolvado sus dormidas habilidades artesanales y se han puesto a crear. También han renacido los mercados, que ya no venden sólo productos manufacturados y baratos, sino que vuelven a llenarse de piezas personales, cuidadas y, en muchos casos únicas.

Este sábado 29 de septiembre en A Coruña podremos disfrutar de uno de estos mercados “especiales”. Dentro de la iniciativa Orzán Revive, que pretende revitalizar el barrio del Orzán con actividades artísticas, actuaciones musicales y talleres, unos cincuenta artesanos de toda Galicia mostrarán sus creaciones. Pintura, cuero, moda, gastronomía… una oferta variada y genuina entre la que estará también “Mis Lanitas”.

Compartiendo puesto con “O Taller da Bubela”, otra emergente y magnífica artesana que procede del mundillo periodístico, presentaremos la marca en sociedad con las primeras propuestas para este invierno.  Ven a vernos!!!!

Orzan Revive

One of the good things that have delivered from this economic crisis that keeps on emptying our pockets is the rebirth of craft and handmade things. To get off the ground and find alternatives to the future, lots of people dusted off their dormant artistic skills and have started to create. It's also the rebirth of markets, that not only sell their handmade products at a more than affordable price, but are also full of personal, impeccable products, unique pieces in the majority of the cases.

This next Saturday 29th of September we will have the opportunity to enjoy one of this "special" markets in A Coruña. "Orzan Revive" is an initiative that aims to revitalise the famous neighborhood of Orzan, with artistic activities, music performances and craft workshops, and where around fifty artists and crafters of Galicia will show their creations. Paintings, leather, trends, food... a genuine and varied event where you will also find some of my very best creations, "Mis Lanitas".

Sharing stand with “O Taller da Bubela”, another amazing emerging crafter with a journalistic background, we will be presenting my new brand to the public, with the first proposals for the next winter. Come and join us!

De lana, tela y otros hilos

Mi Nancy

Si tuviera que resumir mi infancia con una imagen, yo estaría sentada en la cocina de mi casa cosiendo vestidos para mis muñecas. Este fue mi juego favorito hasta bien entrada la adolescencia, y lo que convirtió a mi Nancy en la “itgirl” del mundo de las muñecas. La culpable de esta afición fue mi abuela. A ella le debo mi pasión por la calceta y la costura, y las muchas horas de paciencia y cariño que invirtió en iniciar a su impaciente y rebelde nieta en el arte de las agujas.

Pero el “made at home” perdía posiciones a ritmo acelerado, incapaz de competir contra el furor de las marcas o contra los diseños de pasarela que Zara puso al alcance de cualquier bolsillo. Los modelos “exclusivos” de mi costurera Ernestina y los jerseys de lana calcetados por mi madre pasaron al fondo del armario y me dejé arrastrar por el boom del pret-a-porter, las gangas de las rebajas y la diversidad de los tejidos acrílicos. Abandoné las agujas y dejé en un rincón a mi Nancy… pero afortunadamente nunca olvidé las enseñanzas de mi abuela. Y hace unos años retomé mi afición…

Ahora, en un mundo globalizado, en el que puedes comprar la misma camiseta de H&M o el mismo gorro de Benetton en Madrid, en Londres o en Santiago de Chile, la diferencia la ponen esas pequeñas (o grandes) cosas artesanales que incluso puede hacerse uno mismo. El “handmade” y el “DIY” (do it yourself, o háztelo tú mismo) vuelve a estar de moda, la lana retoma posiciones y las viejas máquinas de coser vuelven a dar puntadas con hilo.

Este blog va de eso, de las cosas que vuelven, de los viejos jerseys de la abuela, de aquellos vestidos exclusivos que nadie más tenía porque estaban hechos por y para nosotras, del placer de calcetar, de la satisfacción de las cosas hechas por uno mismo, de lana, de hilos, de telas, de crochet, de volver a los orígenes…

Y va también de homenajear a mi abuela, y a todas esas abuelas que nos enseñaron tantas cosas útiles. Cada vez que cojo una aguja, una parte de mi regresa a aquellas tardes de la infancia con ella.

Wool, fabrics and other threads

If I had to sum up my childhood with an image, It would be myself in my home kitchen, knitting dresses for my dolls. That was my favorite game until I became a teenager, and made my doll “Nancy” the It girl in the dolls' world. The reason of this hobby was my grandma, Ernestina. She is to blame for my passion for knitting and sewing. She spent lots of hours teaching the art of the needle, with patience and love, to her impatient and rebellious granddaughter.

But the “made at home” style was losing positions very quickly because it couldn't compete against the fury of the brands or against the catwalk designs which Zara put within reach of every pocket. The exclusive designs of my seamstress Ernestina and the wool sweaters that my mother wove ended up in the bottom of the closet. I got carried away with the boom of pret-a-porter, the bargains and the huge variety of acrylic fabrics. I left the needles and my Nancy in a corner… but, fortunately, I never forgot my grandmother's teachings. A few years ago, I resumed my hobby…

Now, in a globalized world where you can buy the same H&M's T-Shirt or the same Benetton's hat in Madrid, London or Santiago de Chile, the difference is in the small - or big - artisanal products that can be done even by yourself. The “made at home” or “DIY” trends are “in” again, the wool gains positions and the old sewing machines are working again.

This blog is about that, about things that come back, about grandmother's old sweaters, about the exclusive dresses that nobody had because they were made only for us, about the pleasure of things made by ourselves, about wool, about fabrics, about crochet, about knitting, about going back to the origins…

And it is also about paying tribute to my nanny, and to all the grandmothers who taught us a lot of useful things. Everytime I pick a needle, one part of myself goes back to the afternoons I spent with her during my childhood.
