Corona tu Navidad con lana

Ya llega la Navidad!! Hay que ir pensando en decorar la casa para darle la bienvenida a las Fiestas, desempolvar los viejos adornos navideños… o hacernos unos nuevos nosotros mismos, como no, con lana!

Yo todavía no tengo una corona para colgar en la puerta de entrada y he encontrado algunas ideas realmente originales.

Con lana y fieltro de diferentes colores puedes conseguir un modelo similar a estos que proponen en Holamama o en el Baúl de Pat. Haz una corona de cartón, envuélvela en lana del color que más te guste y cósele o pégale un ramo de rosas de fieltro de diferentes tamaños. 

El modelo de la izquierda, de yesitsmyparty, es un poco más complejo, y requiere algo más de trabajo, pero el resultado es espectacular. Una combinación de pompones y muñecos de lana con los que sorprenderás al vecindario. 

Hay otras propuestas más sencillas para realizar con pompones. Un ejemplo la de decosfera.  Usan pompones en diferentes colores y figuras de papel imitando copos de nieve. 

Y aquí cuatro propuestas sencillas, llamativas y originales. Sólo tienes que usar las madejas de lana que tengas por casa y enroscarlas en forma de bola. Y para darle un toque más festivo, combínalas con bolas del árbol, cintas o simplemente con tus aguas de calcetas.

Xmas and wool - Wrapped wool Christmas wreaths and more

Christmas is coming!! It´s time to think about redecorating our home, dusting the old Christmas decoration… or doing it ourselves with wool, obviously. I haven't got a Christmas wreath for my front door yet, and surfing on the Internet I found some fantastic ideas.

Using wool and felt in different colours, you can make a model similar to these ones posted by Holamama and El Baúl de Pat. Make a wreath with cardboard, wrap it with wool with the colour that you like the most, and sew or glue a bouquet of different sized roses made of felt.

This proposal of yesitsmyparty is more difficult to do, and needs a bit of hard work, but looks amazing to me! Catch your family and friends with this combination of pompoms and rag dolls.

Decosfera also suggests a simpler otion using pompons in different colours and paper figures that look like snowflakes.

Finally, three simple, striking and original proposals. Just use skeins of any spare wool you have at home, make balls with it and combine them with ribbons and Christmas decorations, or just with your knitting needles.

Algunas ideas para jerseys ideales

Decidido, este invierno me voy a hacer un jersey!! Una de mis prendas de infancia favoritas fue un jersey azul que me tejió mi madre para las fiestas del pueblo. Recuerdo la emoción con que lo estrené una noche de frío y lluvia, y lo especial que me sentía con aquel modelo único… Así que, ¿por qué no recuperar aquella ilusión con una prenda hecha por y para mí?.

Repasando las colecciones de otoño-invierno de algunas conocidas marcas he encontrado interesantes modelos que pueden servir de inspiración. Aquí os dejo una selección:

La colección de Mango de este año presenta varios jerseys de cuello redondo y punto sencillo, pero con bajos asimétricos que le dan un punto de originalidad. El primero es uno de mis preferidos, un jersey bicolor, de punto abierto y con el bajo más corto por delante que por detrás, en acabado redondeado.

También la firma gallega Zara, como todos los años, tiene un amplio abanico de propuestas en punto, en distintos estilos y acabados. Uno de los que más me ha sorprendido por combinar sencillez y originalidad es el jersey torzal con volante, un modelo en lana jaspeada gris y negra, que combina tonos más oscuros para las mangas y que tiene el bajo en forma de volante, emulando el inicio de una falda. De corte similar, aunque con escote en pico y más largo, es la propuesta en blanco perlado. 

Dentro de las líneas de corte más informal, Zara apuesta este año por los tradicionales ochos. Lo hace en un jersey de cuello redondo y bajo en evasé; en un modelo maxi, con cuello en picoy ocho delantero, o en un modelo de Trafaluc con ochos tranzados que crean la propia cintura del jersey. Todos ellos perfectos para combinar con vaqueros, leggins o shorts.

Otra propuesta interesante es la línea de punto de la marca Lavand. Manteniendo su espíritu sugerente, a veces transgresor, y siempre femenino, la firma española presenta en su colección de otoño-invierno originales modelos de manga murciélago y cuello de barco, como este jerseyrojo con aplique de flores en el cuello; o los dos modelos de punto multicoloren degradado.

Some cool ideas for great sweaters

Done, I will knit a jumper for this next winter! One of my childhood favourite clothes was a blue sweater that my mum knitted for me for a party in my hometown. I remember the excitement of using it for the first time, a rainy and cold night, and how cool I felt with that inimitable garment... So, why don't feel that emotion again with something made by and for me?

After reviewing autumn/winter collections of some well known brands, I have found some interesting patterns that can be inspirational. There you go my selection:

Mango 2012 collection shows several basic knitting stitch round neck sweaters with asymetric hems that make of these designs original and unique pieces. The first of them is one of my favourite, an open stitch bicoloured sweater which hem is shorter in the front, and longer and rounded in the back.

As every year, the Galician brand Zara also offers a wide catalogue of knitted proposals with different styles and designs. The one that surprised me the most because of its originality and simplicity combination is the twisted sweater withflounce, a flecked design in grey and black wool, that combines darker tones in the sleeves, and which hem ends in a flounce shape, as if it were a skirt. In a similar way, although with a V neck and longer, we also have another pearl white version.

In the youth lines, Zara bet this year for the traditional cables. It does in a sweater withround neck and  flared hems, in a maxi model, V neck and cable in the front, or a model of Trafaluc with cables that create the waist. All of them are perfects to combine with jeans, leggings or shorts.

The brand Lavand has another interesting models. Keeping your spirit suggestive, sometimes transgressive, and always feminine, the spanish firm has on its fall-winter collection original models with bat sleeve and boat neck. Some examples are this red jersey with applied flowers in the neck , or two models multicolor gradient.

These have been my first inquiries ... I´ll keep looking for ideas!!

Orzán Revive

La artesanía revive en el Orzán

Una de las cosas buenas que han derivado de esta crisis que cada día nos vacía un poco más el bolsillo, es el renacer de la artesanía y de las cosas hechas a mano. Para salir adelante y para buscar nuevas alternativas de futuro, son muchos los que, como yo, han desempolvado sus dormidas habilidades artesanales y se han puesto a crear. También han renacido los mercados, que ya no venden sólo productos manufacturados y baratos, sino que vuelven a llenarse de piezas personales, cuidadas y, en muchos casos únicas.

Este sábado 29 de septiembre en A Coruña podremos disfrutar de uno de estos mercados “especiales”. Dentro de la iniciativa Orzán Revive, que pretende revitalizar el barrio del Orzán con actividades artísticas, actuaciones musicales y talleres, unos cincuenta artesanos de toda Galicia mostrarán sus creaciones. Pintura, cuero, moda, gastronomía… una oferta variada y genuina entre la que estará también “Mis Lanitas”.

Compartiendo puesto con “O Taller da Bubela”, otra emergente y magnífica artesana que procede del mundillo periodístico, presentaremos la marca en sociedad con las primeras propuestas para este invierno.  Ven a vernos!!!!

Orzan Revive

One of the good things that have delivered from this economic crisis that keeps on emptying our pockets is the rebirth of craft and handmade things. To get off the ground and find alternatives to the future, lots of people dusted off their dormant artistic skills and have started to create. It's also the rebirth of markets, that not only sell their handmade products at a more than affordable price, but are also full of personal, impeccable products, unique pieces in the majority of the cases.

This next Saturday 29th of September we will have the opportunity to enjoy one of this "special" markets in A Coruña. "Orzan Revive" is an initiative that aims to revitalise the famous neighborhood of Orzan, with artistic activities, music performances and craft workshops, and where around fifty artists and crafters of Galicia will show their creations. Paintings, leather, trends, food... a genuine and varied event where you will also find some of my very best creations, "Mis Lanitas".

Sharing stand with “O Taller da Bubela”, another amazing emerging crafter with a journalistic background, we will be presenting my new brand to the public, with the first proposals for the next winter. Come and join us!

De lana, tela y otros hilos

Mi Nancy

Si tuviera que resumir mi infancia con una imagen, yo estaría sentada en la cocina de mi casa cosiendo vestidos para mis muñecas. Este fue mi juego favorito hasta bien entrada la adolescencia, y lo que convirtió a mi Nancy en la “itgirl” del mundo de las muñecas. La culpable de esta afición fue mi abuela. A ella le debo mi pasión por la calceta y la costura, y las muchas horas de paciencia y cariño que invirtió en iniciar a su impaciente y rebelde nieta en el arte de las agujas.

Pero el “made at home” perdía posiciones a ritmo acelerado, incapaz de competir contra el furor de las marcas o contra los diseños de pasarela que Zara puso al alcance de cualquier bolsillo. Los modelos “exclusivos” de mi costurera Ernestina y los jerseys de lana calcetados por mi madre pasaron al fondo del armario y me dejé arrastrar por el boom del pret-a-porter, las gangas de las rebajas y la diversidad de los tejidos acrílicos. Abandoné las agujas y dejé en un rincón a mi Nancy… pero afortunadamente nunca olvidé las enseñanzas de mi abuela. Y hace unos años retomé mi afición…

Ahora, en un mundo globalizado, en el que puedes comprar la misma camiseta de H&M o el mismo gorro de Benetton en Madrid, en Londres o en Santiago de Chile, la diferencia la ponen esas pequeñas (o grandes) cosas artesanales que incluso puede hacerse uno mismo. El “handmade” y el “DIY” (do it yourself, o háztelo tú mismo) vuelve a estar de moda, la lana retoma posiciones y las viejas máquinas de coser vuelven a dar puntadas con hilo.

Este blog va de eso, de las cosas que vuelven, de los viejos jerseys de la abuela, de aquellos vestidos exclusivos que nadie más tenía porque estaban hechos por y para nosotras, del placer de calcetar, de la satisfacción de las cosas hechas por uno mismo, de lana, de hilos, de telas, de crochet, de volver a los orígenes…

Y va también de homenajear a mi abuela, y a todas esas abuelas que nos enseñaron tantas cosas útiles. Cada vez que cojo una aguja, una parte de mi regresa a aquellas tardes de la infancia con ella.

Wool, fabrics and other threads

If I had to sum up my childhood with an image, It would be myself in my home kitchen, knitting dresses for my dolls. That was my favorite game until I became a teenager, and made my doll “Nancy” the It girl in the dolls' world. The reason of this hobby was my grandma, Ernestina. She is to blame for my passion for knitting and sewing. She spent lots of hours teaching the art of the needle, with patience and love, to her impatient and rebellious granddaughter.

But the “made at home” style was losing positions very quickly because it couldn't compete against the fury of the brands or against the catwalk designs which Zara put within reach of every pocket. The exclusive designs of my seamstress Ernestina and the wool sweaters that my mother wove ended up in the bottom of the closet. I got carried away with the boom of pret-a-porter, the bargains and the huge variety of acrylic fabrics. I left the needles and my Nancy in a corner… but, fortunately, I never forgot my grandmother's teachings. A few years ago, I resumed my hobby…

Now, in a globalized world where you can buy the same H&M's T-Shirt or the same Benetton's hat in Madrid, London or Santiago de Chile, the difference is in the small - or big - artisanal products that can be done even by yourself. The “made at home” or “DIY” trends are “in” again, the wool gains positions and the old sewing machines are working again.

This blog is about that, about things that come back, about grandmother's old sweaters, about the exclusive dresses that nobody had because they were made only for us, about the pleasure of things made by ourselves, about wool, about fabrics, about crochet, about knitting, about going back to the origins…

And it is also about paying tribute to my nanny, and to all the grandmothers who taught us a lot of useful things. Everytime I pick a needle, one part of myself goes back to the afternoons I spent with her during my childhood.
